The Mental Health Therapist is the principal provider of direct care clinical service at Saginaw Psychological Services. It is the responsibility of the Mental Health Therapist to provide initial and ongoing assessment of each client to determine the most effective and useful counseling. The Mental Health Therapist works in the agency’s Mental Health Counseling center and may have a caseload of clients with varying diagnosis.

Responsibilities
    • Demonstrate a knowledge of assessment techniques including historical assessment, structured interview, and behavioral assessment that contributes to an accurate diagnosis.

 

    • Work with the client and the treatment team to determine an appropriate course of treatment to meet the client’s goals and the expected outcomes of the case.

 

    • Demonstrate basic clinical skills including, but not limited to: a capacity to establish and maintain a treatment alliance, and the ability to provide respect and empathy toward the client.

 

    • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to clients’ treatment.

 

    • Encourage clients to express their feelings and discuss what is happening in their lives, helping them to develop insight into themselves or their relationships.

 

    • Prepare and maintain all required treatment records and reports.

 

    • Counsel clients or patients, individually or in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, or making changes.

 

    • Perform crisis interventions with clients.

 

    • Learn about new developments in counseling by reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars, or establishing and maintaining contact with other colleagues.

 

    • Refer patients, clients, or family members to community resources or to specialists as necessary or when other levels of care are needed beyond the therapist scope.

 

    • Document progress notes, treatment plans, assessments, evaluations and all other required paperwork in a timely fashion according to policy and procedure.
Requirements
    • Must have and be able to prove completion of Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work or Psychology from an accredited college or university.

 

    • Valid Michigan Driver’s license. (required)

 

    • A limited licensed master’s social worker (LLMSW), licensed master’s social worker (LMSW), limited licensed professional counselor (LLPC), and licensed professional counselor (LPC). (required)

 

    • Must be licensed in the state of Michigan; OR must be able to acquire the required license in the state of Michigan; OR transferable to state of Michigan; OR license eligible in the state of Michigan prior to hire. (required)

 

    • Must attend regular staff meetings.

 

  • Must be able to work independently and capable of effective and efficient work output.
Skills
    • Strong writing and communication skills (written plans, notes and oral communications)

 

    • Effective organizational skills leading to proper prioritization of workload and a timely completion of related paperwork.

 

    • Must be able to interact professionally with colleagues at SPSI.

 

  • Must be able to work with a large team of like-minded therapists.
Experience
    • Working experience with a range of consumers offering different types of therapy services to clients/patients.

 

  • Experience with electronic medical records. (preferred)
Education
    • Master’s Degree; Doctoral Degree; or its equivalent in related field areas such as, Psychology, Professional Counselor or Social Work.

 

  • CAADC/CADC (Required)
License and/or Certificate
    • Michigan (Required)
